This guide explains the process, the rewards, and the current limitations of this method.
To get discounts, you must first find a villager who has been turned into a zombie villager. This happens when a zombie attacks a villager. If you want to create one intentionally, you can let a zombie attack a villager but stop before they die. Note that in Hard difficulty, villagers always turn into zombie villagers when killed by zombies. In Normal difficulty, there is a 50% chance. In Easy, they never turn.

Once cured, the villager returns to normal. However, they remember that you saved them. This gives you a massive permanent discount on all their trades. In many cases, items that cost dozens of emeralds will cost only one. This makes curing villagers the most important economic strategy in the game.
It is important to note a major change made in version 1.20.2. Previously, players could exploit this system by zombifying and curing a villager multiple times to stack discounts until items were free. Now, a villager only grants a major discount the first time they are cured. Repeatedly zombifying and curing them does not lower prices further. Existing villagers with stacked discounts keep them, but new cures only work once.
Curing a villager also gives you a major boost in reputation with that village. This prevents Iron Golems from attacking you even if you accidentally hit a villager later. It is a safe and highly recommended practice for any serious player.
Curing zombie villagers is the best way to get cheap trades. While you can no longer stack discounts infinitely, the first cure provides enough of a reduction to make expensive items affordable. Always keep a supply of Golden Apples and Weakness potions ready when exploring near villages.
