Every village tracks your reputation. Your reputation starts at zero. When you perform good deeds, like trading or curing a zombie villager, your reputation increases. When you perform bad deeds, like attacking or killing villagers, your reputation decreases.
The most immediate consequence of low reputation is higher prices. In Java Edition, if your reputation is negative, villagers will increase their prices. This means you will have to pay more emeralds for every item. The price increase can be significant, making trading inefficient or impossible. If you have spent time building a trading hall, attacking a villager can ruin your economy.
The most dangerous consequence is Iron Golem hostility. Iron Golems protect villages. If your reputation drops too low, Iron Golems will consider you a threat. They will attack you on sight. Iron Golems are powerful mobs that can kill you quickly, even with good armor.
If you are attacked by an Iron Golem, you cannot simply fight back. Killing them lowers your reputation further and creates a cycle of violence.
If you accidentally hit a villager, your reputation drops. To fix this, you need to perform good deeds. The best way is to cure a zombie villager. This gives a permanent major positive reputation that can offset the negative effects.
Alternatively, you can wait. Reputation penalties are temporary and will decay over time, but this takes a long time.
