Discover how to find the rare Dappled Forest biome in the Minecraft Wilderness Bound update. Learn its spawn rules near cold biomes, locate Abandoned Camps for exclusive loot and Explorer Maps, and explore new items like Poplar wood, straw beds, and shelf mushrooms.
The new Wilderness Bound update has introduced a mysterious new area called the Dappled Forest. This biome is unique because it is the only place where you can find Poplar trees with red, orange, and yellow leaves, Red Shrubs, and the new Abandoned Camp structures. Many players are searching for this location but cannot find it because it has very specific spawn rules. This guide explains exactly where it appears, what you will find inside, and how to locate the rare maps that lead to other secret places.
The Dappled Forest is an autumn-themed biome that generates in the Overworld. It features a distinct look with leaf litter on the ground, coarse dirt patches, and trees that have three different varieties of colored leaves. The trees in this biome are called Poplar trees. Unlike other trees in the game, these do not grow from saplings you find in the wild; they must be grown from Poplar saplings, which are only found in this biome or by breaking the leaves of existing Poplar trees.

This biome is also the exclusive home of the Red Shrub. This is a red bush variant that does not change color based on the biome it is placed in. It also contains Shelf Mushrooms, which are a new type of mushroom that grows on Poplar trees and fallen logs. These mushrooms are bouncy and can be used to craft food items.
The most important feature of this biome is the Abandoned Camp. These are structures that generate on the surface and contain loot, tools, and rare maps.

The most critical thing to understand about the Dappled Forest is its location. It does not generate randomly like a standard forest. The game code specifically places this biome only next to cold biomes. If you are looking in warm or temperate areas, you will never find it.
You must search for the edges of the following cold biomes:
The Dappled Forest will generate directly adjacent to these areas. It acts as a border between the cold regions and other temperate zones. When exploring, look for the transition from snow and ice to autumn colors. The biome may be small or hidden behind terrain features, so you must explore the entire perimeter of any cold biome you find.

If you see any of these items, you are close. Follow the signs to locate the main biome.
Abandoned Camps are structures that generate in the Dappled Forest as well as many other biomes, including Meadow, Cherry Grove, Forest, Birch Forest, Flower Forest, Windswept Forest, Taiga, Swamp, Savanna, and others. However, the Dappled Forest is the only biome where these camps generate alongside Poplar trees and Red Shrubs.

These camps consist of tents made from white wool stairs, straw beds, and fences. The specific layout of the camp depends on the biome it generates in. Some camps may have a stone shelter, a pond, a crop farm, or overgrown elements like cobwebs.
Inside these camps, you will find chests and barrels. These containers hold loot such as wheat, bread, leather, axes, arrows, and other survival items. Some camps contain a hidden oxidized copper chest, which holds rarer items.
The most valuable item you can find in these chests is an Explorer Map. There are eight variants of the Abandoned Camp map, which lead to camps in different biomes, including Bamboo Jungle, Cherry Grove, Birch Forest, Dappled Forest, Flower Forest, Pale Garden, Swamp, and Windswept Forest.
Additionally, secret chests in these camps may contain structure maps for Buried Ancient Cities, Buried Mineshafts, Desert Pyramids, and Warm Ocean Ruins. These maps are unique items and cannot be zoomed out or copied.
When exploring the Dappled Forest, you will encounter several new blocks and items that are not available anywhere else.
Poplar Wood Set: This includes Poplar logs, stripped Poplar logs, Poplar wood, stripped Poplar wood, Poplar planks, and all crafted items made from these planks, such as stairs, slabs, signs, hanging signs, buttons, pressure plates, doors, fences, fence gates, trapdoors, and shelves. You can also craft Poplar boats and Poplar boats with chests.

Straw Beds: These are a new type of bed that can be crafted using three hay bales to make four straw beds. They can be stacked up to 16. Unlike regular beds, straw beds are destroyed after a single use. They allow you to sleep through the night but do not set your spawn point. If used in the Nether or the End, they break without exploding.

Cushions: These are decorative entities that can be sat on. They are crafted from three wool slabs of the same color and come in all 16 colors. Cushions can be placed on any surface regardless of height but break if moved by pistons or if the supporting block is removed. They generate naturally in Abandoned Camps.

Shelf Mushrooms: These come in two sizes. Small shelf mushrooms can be grown into large ones using bone meal. Breaking a large shelf mushroom drops two shelf mushrooms. They can only be placed on full sides of blocks and are bouncy when fallen on. They can be used to craft mushroom stew, suspicious stew, and rabbit stew.

Red Shrubs: These are red bush variants that are not affected by biome tint. They can be collected and used for decoration.

Wool and Concrete Stairs and Slabs: The update adds the ability to craft stairs and slabs for all 16 colors of wool and concrete. These can be crafted directly or cut in a stonecutter.

Explorer Maps found in Abandoned Camps are unique items. They show the location of specific structures or biomes. The player icon on these maps now shows the direction you are facing, which helps with navigation.

To use an Explorer Map, simply hold it in your hand. The map will display your current location and the location of the target. Follow the white marker to reach the destination. Note that Explorer Maps cannot be zoomed out using a cartography table. They are single-use items for navigation only.
The eight Abandoned Camp maps lead to camps in specific biomes. If you need resources from a specific biome, these maps can guide you there. The structure maps lead to rare locations like Buried Ancient Cities, which are otherwise very difficult to find.
The Dappled Forest can be dangerous. Although it looks peaceful, dangerous mobs can spawn here at night. Always bring weapons, armor, and food when exploring.
Rabbits, foxes, and cold variants of farm animals spawn in this biome. While rabbits and foxes are not dangerous, they can be a nuisance. Cold variants of farm animals may be aggressive or have different behaviors.
Abandoned Camps may contain traps or dangerous situations. Be careful when opening chests or entering structures. Some camps may have overgrown elements that hide mobs or hazards.
If you find a Dappled Forest, do not destroy all the Poplar trees or Red Shrubs. These resources are rare and non-renewable if you do not save saplings. Always collect saplings from Poplar leaves to ensure you can grow more trees in the future.
Once you have located the Dappled Forest, you can use its resources for various projects. Build a cozy cabin using Poplar wood and wool stairs. Create autumn-themed decorations using Red Shrubs and leaf litter. Grow Shelf Mushrooms for food or bounce pads. Use the loot from Abandoned Camps to start a new base.
You can also use the Explorer Maps to find other rare biomes and structures. This can save you hours of searching and help you gather resources more efficiently.
Remember that the Dappled Forest is a unique part of the game world. Treat it with respect and leave some resources for other players. Do not grief or destroy other players' builds.
Now you have all the information you need to find the Dappled Forest and explore its secrets. Grab your gear and start your adventure.
