How to fix outdated server error in Minecraft

  Game Hosting

In this tutorial, we will show you how to fix the “Outdated server! I’m still on …” error on your Minecraft server hosting or other forms of hosting so long as you are running a Minecraft server.

Note: the error could also just say “Outdated server!” or “Outdated server! I’m still {0}”, the fix will be the same still.

This error occurs because there is a mismatch between your client version of Minecraft (the version you launched Minecraft with) and the server version (the version of Minecraft your Minecraft server is running on). For example, if I run my server on 1.21 and I start Minecraft on 1.18, I will get the error, and vice versa.

Straightforwardly, you can fix this error by matching the client and server versions to be the same. This means that you can fix it in either of two ways:

  1. Change your client version to the server that your Minecraft server host is running on. So if your server is running on 1.19, change the version you’re launching Minecraft with to 1.19, and then join the server! This will resolve the error.
  2. Alternatively, change your server version to your client version. So if you’re launching Minecraft with 1.20, then change your Minecraft server’s version to 1.20 and restart it. This will resolve the error as well.
To do this, use the “Version” or “Java MC Version” section of our game panel, or manually install a new Minecraft jar, replacing the old one.

NOTE: It is also possible to allow ALL versions of Minecraft to join your Minecraft server, through plugins such as ViaVersion, ViaRewind, ViaBackwards, etc. Go to our guide (linked in the preceding sentence) for this to learn how to do so.

Some other common issues can be:
– Server not starting: Your server may not be starting up, due to your world failing to generate. In this case, you may have tried to downgrade your world to a lower version of Minecraft, which is not possible to do without outside programs. Here, you may need to reset your Minecraft server world.
– Errors on startup or crashes: These may be for too numerous of reasons, so you’ll need to contact us and/or dig deeper for the solution. The error can be diagnosed starting from the logs and/or crash report(s). Generally though, some common culprits could be the installation of bad plugins (e.g. leaked plugins) that may pollute your server or even cause a memory leak. We recommend only installing recommended Minecraft server plugins.

Conclusion:
Establishing a successful connection to your Minecraft server, especially for a public Minecraft server, is vital as unsuccessful connections means deterring potential or current players away or even demotivating you and your friends to play! Rest assured, at ElixirNode, we guarantee a successful connection with our services, so long as you contact us in the event something goes wrong. When something goes wrong, it almost always is due to a simple misalignment or misconfiguration as it is the case with this issue. So, do not despair, a fix is always there.
