What to Do with Nitwit Villagers in Minecraft

Not all villagers are useful. Some wear green robes and refuse to work. These are Nitwits. Unlike other villagers, Nitwits cannot trade, cannot change professions, and cannot contribute to your economy. This article explains what Nitwits are, why they exist, and how to handle them in your village.

What Is a Nitwit?

A Nitwit is a type of villager that is born without the ability to have a profession. They are easily identified by their green robes. While normal villagers wear outfits corresponding to their biome and profession, Nitwits always wear green. They do not have a job site block and cannot claim one. If you try to interact with a Nitwit, they will simply grunt and bob their head in Java Edition, or do nothing in Bedrock Edition.

Why Can't They Trade?

The game mechanics explicitly prevent Nitwits from trading. They have no profession, so they have no trade pool. They cannot level up, and they cannot be assigned a job site block. Even if you place a Lectern or Composter next to them, they will ignore it. This is a deliberate design choice by the developers to introduce an element of unpredictability and challenge to village management0.

Breeding and Nitwits

Nitwits can still breed. If you provide food and beds, Nitwits will produce baby villagers. However, there is a catch. In Bedrock Edition, baby villagers have a chance to grow up into Nitwits. In Java Edition, Nitwits cannot be bred directly to produce more Nitwits, but baby villagers have a small chance to become Nitwits as they grow up. This means your village population can naturally include a percentage of useless villagers.

How to Handle Nitwits

Since Nitwits cannot trade, they are useless for a trading hall. However, they still consume resources. They need food to breed (if you are trying to increase population) and they take up bed space.

  • Isolate Them: If you want to keep them for breeding purposes, isolate them in a separate area where they cannot interfere with your working villagers.
  • Remove Them: Many players choose to remove Nitwits from their villages. Since they serve no economic purpose, keeping them around is a waste of resources. You can push them away from your village or, if necessary, eliminate them to free up beds for useful villagers.
  • Do Not Try to Convert: Do not waste time trying to give them a job. It is impossible. A Nitwit will remain a Nitwit forever. If a Nitwit is zombified and then cured, they become an unemployed villager in Bedrock Edition, which means they can then take a job. This is the only way to "fix" a Nitwit, but it requires risking their life to a zombie.

Conclusion

Nitwits are a frustrating part of Minecraft's village mechanics. They cannot trade and cannot work. While they can be used for breeding, most players prefer to separate them from their productive villagers. If you encounter a Nitwit, understand that they will never become a trader. Plan your village layout accordingly to minimize their impact on your economy.
